Roundup Linked to Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

Exposure to Roundup and other glyphosate-based herbicides has been linked to an increased risk of developing lymphatic cancer or lymphoma. The lymphatic system includes the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, tonsils, adenoids, and bone marrow, all of which can be affected by lymphoma. Lymphatic cancer can also affect other organs in the body.

Roundup and glyphosate-based weedkillers have been especially linked to Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, in which cancerous tumors develop in white blood cells called lymphocytes.

What is Roundup/Glyphosate?

Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, is one of the most commonly used herbicides, used to kill certain plants and grasses. It is also used to manage the growth of plants, prepare crops for harvest, and to ripen fruit. Glyphosate is often used by agricultural workers, gardeners, and landscapers at businesses, parks, schools, and public spaces.

Glyphosate Linked to DNA and Chromosomal Damage

Studies have linked glyphosate to an increased risk for DNA and chromosomal damage, as well as for blood-related cancers. An analysis by the University of Washington Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS) found a 41 percent increased risk of developing Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma for Americans who had frequent exposure to the herbicide.

In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization classified glyphosate as a 2A probable carcinogen.
